Chapter 5 Shlokas 8, 9
नैव किञ्चित्करोमीति युक्तो मन्येत तत्त्ववित्।
पश्यञ्शृण्वन्स्पृशञ्जिघ्रन्नश्नन्गच्छन्स्वपञ्श्वसन्।।८।।
प्रलपन्विसृजन्गृह्णन्नुन्मिषन्निमिषन्नपि ।
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेषु वर्तन्त इति धारयन्।।९।।
Defining the attributes of such a Saankhya Yogi, the Lord says:
Even whilst seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping, breathing, speaking, ingesting, expelling, opening the eyes and also closing the eyes, that Yogi, who is a Knower of the Truth, comprehending that it is the senses that interact with the objects of sense, knows that ‘I do naught’.
Tatvavit (तत्ववित्)
1. He knows the truth that the doers are in fact the gunas.
2. He has merged into the Atma.
3. The Lord is describing the one who has realised this truth and has accepted it in life – not one who merely has belief in it.
4. The Tatvavit is an Atmavaan.
5. He has transcended the body idea.
6. Such a one knows that the doer is someone other than him.
7. Having realised that he is not the body, how can such a one claim any actions performed by that body to be his own?
8. He is one with Brahm because the ‘I’ which previously claimed ownership of the body self, is now one with the Atma.
Such a one is a non-doer. He cannot claim any actions of the body because he is devoid of ego, of the ‘I’. No matter what the body does, he knows that the gunas control all action and everything is therefore happening spontaneously and despite him.
However, it is not that your body can do whatever it likes, because you are not the body; it is when others:
a) inflict injury on you,
b) defame you,
c) give you recognition,
d) attack you in a heinous manner,
e) rob you,
f) or confront you with what you do not like,
that you must remember that you are not the body. Whatever others do, do not blame them, because their body is acting prompted and controlled by their gunas.
Knowing thus that the organs of sense interact with their objects, the Atmavaan remains a non-doer.
